Photos from Crete

After we returned from our trip to Syros, Luz had to go back to Atlanta, and I left (at the same time) left for a week-long conference (IGAC 2002) at Heraklio, Crete. Here is a map of the island.

Here is a few photos taken at the airport when Luz was leaving for Atlanta, and Thanos was departing to Crete:

Of course, there is always some time to be a bit silly!!!

On the way to Crete, we flew over Santorini, a volcanic island of the cyclades. You can clearly see in the picture the crescent-type shape of the island. Actually, a few thousand years ago, the island was circular, with the volcano in the center; after an eruption, much of the island collapsed and retained its current shape.

Here is the location of the conference. Not bad, e? Thanos took this picture while enjoying a frappe (cold greek coffee).

Here is a picture of the conference center - it was a really nice place.

Here are the organizers of the conference - Maria Kanakidou and George Mihalopoulos.

Of course, there was a big party (Greeks know how to have fun!) thrown towards the end of the conference.

There were alot of people that I knew at the conference - here is a picture of Thanos with Tony Hynes from the University of Miami:

Everybody had a good time! (Even Thanos....)

John Seinfeld was also at the conference: here he is swing-dancing with Maria Kanakidou.

Day trip to Knossos

We had a "free day" and decided to do some local tourism. John Seinfeld, Colin O'Dowd, Lynn Russel and Thanos rented a car, and toured Heraklion. First stop: Knossos and the ancient ruins of King Minoas:

There was a big line-up to see the king's throne.

Here it is!

After touring the ruins and going to the museum, we went to a small port and had lunch at a beachside taverna. The food was excellent, and the view was perfect (you could see some of it in the background). Ah, this is the life!
