A trip to Durham, NC from May 24-25, 2003 (Memorial Day Weekend)

Our friends Fidel and Xomalin (who got married in Mexico City at the end of March - check out the link from that trip as well!) work at Duke University, which is located in Durham, NC. So, we decided one day to just go and... visit. Durham is located to the Northeast of Georgia. It is a very beautiful (and green) place. We started off from home (point 1 on the map) and drove for 6 hours to get there. Here is the route we took:

We arrived Saturday afternoon. We had a wonderful traditional NC-style BBQ (well, 2 of the many styles available) and then went for a few drinks at Chappel Hill, where UNC-Chappel Hill is located. We didn't take any pictures then (too dark), but believe us, we had lots of fun.

Next day we woke up (somewhat late) and had crepes for breakfast. Here are Xomalin and Luz in the kitchen setting up things...

And... in the process of making them! (they were delicious).

So, after breakfast, we went to some gardens at Duke University (it was a bit cloudy that day, but fortunately it didn't rain). Here are some pictures. This is the entrance to the gardens.

A picture of Xomalin, Fidel and Thanos.

Here is Luz at the Japanese pond (she looks a bit oriental here herself :).

A picture by the pond. You can see some of Duke Univertisy buildings in the background.

More nice pictures.

Luz and thanos by the bridge.

A few more pictures from the gardens follow.

Duke has this chapel as its "trademark", which is located at the central area of the university campus. It is quite impressive, and very beautiful inside.

A closer look.

As we enter, you can see in the background the typical architecture of the university's buildings. It's modeled after the style of Yale and Harvard.

Inside the chapel. It's huge!

A close up on the stained glass. It's quite impressive.

A view of the pipe organ. Thanos would love to play this one!!!!!

Outside of the chapel, we saw a few roses. we caught Luz picking one....

The rest of the day went by pretty fast. It was a beautiful trip. But, as all things in life, it came to an end, but with a beautiful sunset! (this was taken on our way back to Atlanta).
